The Science Behind Rewired Mind

Rewired Mind's books use plain, direct language — "the loop," "the freeze," "the reset." Underneath that language are six ideas from psychology and behavioral science that have been studied for decades. This page explains each one in plain English, links to the research behind it, and is honest about where the established research ends and Rewired Mind's own frameworks begin.

Self-efficacy
Psychologist Albert Bandura's research found that a person's belief in their own ability to complete a task predicts whether they start it, how hard they try, and whether they stick with it — often independent of their actual skill level at the time. In other words, confidence tends to follow evidence you've built for yourself through action, more than it follows information or pep talks.

Behavioral action & exposure
Decades of research on anxiety and avoidance show that approaching an avoided situation, rather than waiting to feel ready first, is what breaks the cycle that keeps avoidance and anxiety in place. Related research on low mood found that taking action in your life — behavioral activation — worked as well on its own as more complex talk-therapy approaches for many people.

Implementation intentions
Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer's research found that people who form a specific plan — "if X happens, I will do Y" — follow through on their goals significantly more often than people who only set a general intention like "I'll be more confident."

Habit formation
A widely cited study found that it takes an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic — not the commonly repeated "21 days" figure, which doesn't come from this or any other controlled study. The real range was wide: 18 to 254 days, depending on the person and the behavior.

Rumination
Psychologist Susan Nolen-Hoeksema's research found that passively dwelling on distress and its causes — rumination — tends to prolong and deepen low mood, compared with actively problem-solving or shifting attention to something else.

Self-focused attention
Research on social anxiety found that shifting attention inward — onto your own anxiety symptoms and self-image — during a social situation tends to increase anxiety and make it harder to engage naturally with what's actually happening around you.

The six ideas above are established psychology, studied and published well before Rewired Mind existed. "The Loop," "The Freeze," "The Reset," the 7-Day Reset structure, and the other named systems in our books are Jonathan Florence's own way of organizing and applying that research into something usable day to day.
